A lot of people let ride something extremely important when making beats. About a invite yourself this question: why are you making beats in the first occupation? The obvious answer should be because you love hearing the your own beats and you want other people to love hearing your beats.
But if you’ve listened to a lot of rap and hip hop lately you’ll realize that a lot of folks making beats out there may not be listening to the beats they’re making. Either they have some low, low standards or they just don’t pay enough attention with their ears when they’re making beats. That’s the thing – you have to become a better listener.
I think people are getting brainwashed by bad radio and horrible amateur mix tape style cds they’re finding for free on the counters of the record stores and barber shops. People pick up free demos and hear some uninspired, weak beats and say to themselves “man, I can make beats AT LEAST as good as this!!”. And they’re pretty much right, they can make some half decent crap too. But where are your standards, is what I want to ask?
Why do you want to be better than the no-name cat who has an ugly free demo cd that looks and sounds like every other ugly free demo cd? You should be aiming to take over your heros, not just the neighborhood dude who kinda makes some throwaway beats every now and then. You should be trying to make Kanye and Jay Z sound like beginners.
Start listening and actually hearing what’s great about your favorite songs. Listen to what makes a beat undeniable, and raise your beat making standards higher than everyone else, and then you might have something to work with.
